See this map of American usage. Apparently, in the US, "garage sale" is more common in the north than in the south (except for Texas, for some reason).

I'd call it a garage sale if the stuff is in the garage (or driveway) and a yard sale if the stuff is in the yard. If neighbors are simultaneously holding sales, it could also be a block sale.
In Dallas Texas, there are a lot of "Estate sales".
